Pizza, just like burgers, was something that took me a long time to master by just using plant-based ingredients (not saying that this is mastering it, but this pizza is pretty darn good). A tasty pizza is very subjective, we have those who hate mushrooms, those who can’t stand olives, those who prefer more veggies and those who like a pizza to really just taste like meat and cheese. This one is for those of you who like a very high calorie pizza that tastes meaty, cheesy and full of flavor.
Obviously, the additional ingredients on the pizza such as olives and mushrooms you can change according to your preferences. This pizza isn’t really budget friendly, nor is it healthy, but it is the ultimate way (that I know), to create a pizza that everyone will absolutely love and may not even be able to tell that it is plant-based.
There are a couple of products that I use for my ultimate pizza that you may not be able to find in your own country. However, all of these can be replaced with any other brand that has minced “meat”, “cheese” or anything similar.
This may not be available in your country, but it is incredibly popular here in Denmark. Naturli created one of the most affordable out there and tasty pea based plant meat (they were also one of the first to do it around here). It may not be as fancy as many other brands but I often find it on discount for as much as 3.60$ (23 dkk), which is way cheaper compared to some other options.
However, for my pizza I do not use their original Minced Meat, but one that is Called ALL Star. I really don’t know what the difference between the two is but I find the All Star Version incredibly tasty and often it can be found for even less – around 3.20$ (20dkk).

Naturli Grate Me Cheese
Grate Me! is one of the best and most affordable cheese options around here (in my opinion). It is called grate me so I grated it for my pizza but it is perfectly tasty to use in a sandwich or on top of bread. Now, it does not melt that well on a pizza but I find it tastes pretty good and provides your pizza a bit of extra flavor. The whole package can be found in Copenhagen for around 4$ (25dkk). For the pizza, depending on how big you make it, you could use half or the whole (I used the whole box since I made 2 gigantic pizzas).

Violife Vegan Cheese
Now for a bit of extra cheese taste I used Violife Cheese which is an awesome vegan cheese option here in Copenhagen. I wanted to add a bit of extra cheesiness to the pizza and I had this in my fridge so I thought I could try using it. It definitely gave the pizza a bit of a kick. Violife is one of the best vegan cheeses out there and maybe the best to put on pizza out of the ones I have tried so far.
*If this is not available in your country, use any other type of vegan sliced cheese.
I recently discovered that I can put seitan on top of everything and it tastes awesome. Seitan is what you put on top of the minced meat to give your pizza an extra kick.
*Use any brand of seitan slices you have available
*Seitan is definitely an optional ingredient. However, I do recommend picking any kind of extra “meat”. For example, a vegan sausage, vegan pepperoni or anything similar will do the trick.
Update: After trying a bunch of alternatives, I actually prefer putting vegan pepperoni or chick-free pieces instead of seitan, and I recommend that to anyone trying to make this pizza.
After we briefly discussed some of the products used for the pizza, it is time to get to business. What about the dough? The best pizza is when you make the dough from scratch which is what I definitely recommend if you have the time. If you don’t then any vegan store-bought dough will do just fine.
Vegan Pizza Dough
- 1 cube yeast 1½ to 2 teaspoons instant yeast, or 2 to 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 500 ml water almost 2 and a half US cups
- 500 g graham flour
- 150 g all purpose flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2-3 tbsp oil of choice I used olive oil
- Start by proofing your yeast first. If you are new to making bread or dough, check out this guide. Basically what you need to do is put the yeast in the warm water (500ml), then add the sugar, salt and oil. I recommend waiting around 10 minutes before continuing to make sure your yeast is activating. You should be able to see a layer similar to this forming on top.
- In another bowl, mix your flours together and slowly start adding the yeast to the mixture, stirring continuously to form a dough.
- Use your hands and get in there and really shape a nice ball of dough – if your mix is too wet and sticking too much to your hands, add a little bit of extra all purpose flour, but be careful not to overdo it.
- Cover with a cloth and wait for the dough to double in size for around 50 minutes.
- When it has doubled in size, you can separate it into 2 chunks out of which you can roll out your dough on top of some baking paper. Feel free to put a bit of flour on the paper to make sure that it does not stick too much as you roll it out.
- You can roll your dough out as thin as you want or as thick – it does not expand much after baking.
Best Vegan Pizza
- 300 g / 0,6 lbs any vegan minced meat I use Naturli All Star
- 300 g / 0,6 lbs any vegan cheese
- 200 g / 0,4 lbs another vegan cheese
- 500 g / 1 lbs tomato/ pizza sauce
- 200 g / 0,4 lbs green olives
- oregano dried
- any veggies you like on your pizza
- a bit of oil for frying the vegan minced meat
- 2 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp onion powder
- Start by frying your minced meat and seitan in a frying pan, add salt, paprika and onion powder and fry until it seems done (5-10min).
- Have your doughs rolled out and ready on some baking paper.
- Cover the dough with pizza sauce and add some oregano on top.
- Add your minced meat and seitan on top of the pizzas – try to spread out evenly.
- Add on top of it all the vegan cheeses – try to place them evenly.
- You can sprinkle with some water or oil on top to help your cheese melt.
- Lastly, add your veggies (mine were olives and mushrooms). Feel free to use any veggies you like. Some good options could be red onion, peppers or eggplant.
- Bake your pizzas for around 15-20 minutes on 200°C / 392°F.
- Enjoy your vegan pizza!!
I think it is safe to say I am not very good at taking photos of my food.. You can’t see how thick the dough is but it was around 1.5-2cm.
This is definitely not a healthy option but it is so incredibly tasty!
