Vegan options in Athens

As someone who grew up eating gyros or other alternatives, it is a food that I missed dearly when I started eating plant-based. Going to Athens allowed me to try some of the tastiest Gyros I have ever had and best of all – it was all vegan. I really had an amazing time eating vegan food in Athens and I was pleasantly surprised to find so many places accidentally having vegan options. I wish we had a bit more time to explore but what I learned I will share here with you anyway.

About Athens

Athens is amazing, it is full of history, beauty, places to see, vegan food try and most importantly – cats. There seems to be an interesting cat culture going around due to the many stray cats. When you think of stray cats you may be feeling like “awww no, poor babies” but it is not like that in Athens (well at least not in the summer). The cats over there seem to be respected, appreciated and fed lots of cat food and water by everyone. Local or tourist, a cat is fed by someone and will not remain hungry. As someone who completely adores cats, Athens was a heaven for me. The best of all was that cats are so used to being around people that they will let you pet them.

Near our AirBnb there was this great cafe called Cafe Mentor, where we enjoyed a lovely ice latte kind of coffee which they call…. You could have the coffee with three types of milk – oat, soy and coconut! Apart from that, the café offered a vegan club sandwich which seemed huge and I am so sad we never got to try it. At this café, we met the cutest cat of them all, which I cannot write this post without mentioning. Her name was Piti (if we remember correctly), and she literally lived at that café. She was the snuggliest cat we had ever met, came by to snuggle with us every evening as we enjoyed a drink at the café, purred and basically made us fall in love with her. If we were to go back to Athens, we would probably go by just to snuggle her.

Now let me share with you some of the best vegan options in Athens and a few tips!

Vegan Beat Athens

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Seriously, Vegan Beat Athens is maybe one of my favorite places to eat ever (not just in Greece). I grew up eating kebab, durum and gyros, so discovering the vegan alternative was like finding the holy grail. Vegan Beat Athens offers vegan gyros, some vegan burgers, fries and a couple of desserts. One of my favorite things about eating in Greece was how every restaurant gave you all you can drink free water – who else absolutely hates paying for water?

Most popular dishes: 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗚𝘆𝗿𝗼𝘀 • 𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 • 𝗟𝗮𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗷𝘂𝗻

Our favorite: Definitely the Space Gyros! We tried the burger and lahmajun as well but the gyros was absolutely out of this world. If you visit Athens you can’t miss out on it!

Fantastic service

I actually have an interesting story about visiting Vegan Beat Athens. What happened is, we had already ordered our meals and as we were paying our card wouldn’t work. It turned out their internet was down and we didn’t have cash on us so we couldn’t pay our meal. The employee at the time said to us “Don’t worry, you can eat now and just come by LATER IN THE EVENING, to pay us” … Now when is the last time you found such trusting employees?? It was so absolutely nice of them to do this, we were both blown away.

Veganaki

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was where we had the best vegan pizza we had ever had! If you like a thin layer with lots of ingredients this is the place for you. The place is cozy with plenty of seating space and offers gluten free options as well. The food and service was fantastic too and definitely worth a visit or two.

The food was full of flavor and definitely worth it. We got so stuffed that walking in the sun afterwards was not easy. I cannot for the life of me remember what I ate but I know it was tasty as well. One of the best things about this place (apart from the food) is the outdoor sitting area which can be so cozy in the summer. I recommend the place mostly for dinner.

Peas Vegan and Raw Food

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was probably my least favorite out of the three I mention here, however still something that you must try when visiting Athens. Beware, the place doesn’t really have seating options and is best for take away.

We tried the Seitan Gyros and to be honest, we should have tried the mushroom one since this was a bit too much. I highly recommend trying a couple of different options to find what you like but keep in mind that the portions are quite large – I couldn’t finish my gyros at all. One of the things I absolutely love about this place is the emphasis on ethical veganism on their website and how they are not just describing it as a diet.

“So this is how Peas was born, from our need to integrate our qualities and share them with you. We dream a harmonic world, without violence, where everyone cares, respects and loves each other. The food is just the beginning, a good motivation… the caring of the soul is what we are aiming for. Furthermore veganism is not just related to food. It is a way of living, an internal process of consolidation with everything.” Check out their website here.
