As we discussed the Law of Pure Potentiality, it is time to dive into the Law of Giving and Receiving, which we can consider the next step into the journey of bettering ourselves.
The Law of Giving and Receiving (as described in the “7 spiritual laws of Yoga”), is about keeping the life-force circulating around you. How you do that is by being open to giving and receiving.
Intention and the law of Giving and Receiving
The law of giving and receiving is a lot about intention. When you either give or receive anything you must always make sure that you do it with the intention of generating good, the intention of generating happiness. Your end-goal must always be to generate some kind of positivity for others and yourself. With the law of giving and receiving there is no room for any kind of negativity.
“Happiness is life supporting and life sustaining”
How to practice the Law of Giving and Receiving
- Use your breath as a powerful tool
By being aware of your breath you can set your attention to it and avoid being distracted or occupied with negative thoughts. If throughout your day, you feel resistance in your body because things are not going the way you want them to go, then you should try to bring your focus to your breath and use it to regain your sense of effortlessness and openness to giving and receiving.
- Practice gratitude
It is easy to forget about all the gifts in life we have already received. Most of us in modern society have so much but are grateful for so little, which is a shame considering how good it feels to be grateful for things.
By practicing gratitude you will learn to celebrate the things you normally do not consider so precious. Your energy, your life, all the gifts you have been given that you do not normally think about will suddenly seem bigger than they are and will allow you to be more open towards receiving and giving.
- Allow yourself to feel
Throughout the day we often suppress feelings because we believe they are inappropriate, there at the wrong time, uncalled for or simply because we are ashamed. By allowing yourself to feel, you will allow your life force to be set free. Take a deep breath, hold it in for a few seconds and then release… Do you see how good it feels to let it go? Holding that breath in is the same thing as holding in your emotions and feelings instead of letting them go and allowing yourself to relax.
Allowing yourself to feel will also make you more compassionate. As you are in tune with your own feelings and emotions, you will notice those of others and be able to offer a helping hand when needed.
The Law of Giving and Receiving is only one of the 7 Spiritual Laws of Yoga. However, it is also one of the most difficult to master in daily life as nowadays we all have the tendency to forget all the beautiful things we have been given and all the ways in which we can give to others.
